This March, feel the rhythm of love as GMA-7 turns another well-loved classic into the newest compelling series to hit television. The seventh installment of GMA-7’s top-rating back-to-back afternoon franchise, Kaputol ng Isang Awit is based on the 1991 blockbuster of the same title, directed by Emmanuel Borlaza. It is a breathtaking story about two women who live in two different worlds, but seek to conquer the same dream. “The credit for the story goes to the creative team,” Director Mike Tuviera says of the story. “When I came in, concrete na talaga ‘yung idea nila. Kung saan nila dadalhin ‘yung istorya. And I think it was a very smart decision.” The director explains that with the movie only serving as the starting-off point of the series, fans of the movie can also become fans of the show. “Kahit alam mo na ‘yung mga sikreto sa pelikula, ‘yung twists—" “Kahit alam mo na ‘yung story nung original film, magugustuhan mo pa rin ‘to.” On March 3, Kaputol ng Isang Awit brings together the country’s future drama princes and princesses Glaiza De Castro, Lovi Poe, Marky Cielo and Jolo Revilla, under the direction of Direk Mike. They will be joined by Tirso Cruz III, Snooky Serna, Leo Martinez, Gary Estrada, Isabel Granada and Tuesday Vargas with Ms. Jennylyn Mercado in a special guest role. “It’s really drama,” Wilma Galvante (GMA-7 SVP for Entertainment) promises. “Pinapahinog natin [ang artists] at nakikita mo agad na nagbu-bloom [sila]. At maganda naman ang nagiging takbo [ng programa]. And with the support of our award-winning seasoned stars, our talents, siyempre macha-challenge sila ‘di ba?” The lead character Sarah Monteza, played by Glaiza de Castro, is a poor, mousy-looking young lady who has a great voice and dreams to be a famous singer someday. But despite her talent, her cruel grandfather Lolo Ige (Leo Martinez) forbids her to sing. “Walang comedy ako dito ngayon,” Leo reveals, saying this is the farthest he’s come to the roles that people are used to seeing him play. “‘Yung last ko is Lolo Pancho which is medyo lovable doon sa MariMar. Dito, hindi ako lovable dito.” He adds with a laugh, “kaya medyo nahihirapan ako dito.” And as such, Sarah’s work as a back-up singer for famous Joanna Ambrosio (Lovi Poe) remains a secret to her family. Lovi Poe portrays her most challenging role to date as she plays Joanna, daughter of rich businessman Julio Ambrosio (Gary Estrada). Her dreams of becoming a famous recording star have come true; and this only serves to make her more spoiled, selfish and self-centered -- to the point that she will do anything to keep her star status. Playing Eric Valderama, an executive at a recording company, is Marky Cielo. Musically inclined with a knack of spotting real talent, Eric is the young man who will discover the power of Sarah’s voice -- as well as expose her to the manipulations and schemes of Joana. Jolo Revilla, on the other hand, plays Marco Salcedo -- a dashing and debonair executive who is a true marketing man. His charismatic way of talking should’ve landed him the job for himself, yet he let his mother wrangle the position for him, with the help of a family friend, Elena Valderama (Isabel Granada). “It’s a very challenging role for me, kasi ang role ko dito ay very bossy,” Isabel shares, saying that in reality, she’s not as bossy as her character is in the show. Making the story more colorful and compelling are character Mimay Sison (Tuesday Vargas), Vina Monteza (Snooky Serna) and Arsenio Rivera (Tirso Cruz III). Mimay is the best friend of Sarah who pushes her to achieve her dreams; Vina is the mother that Sarah uses as an inspiration to reach for her dreams; and Arsenio is an inmate who hides a past that would complete Sarah’s future. “Gaya nga ng sinabi ni Direk kanina,” Tirso teases, “familiar naman kayo sa takbo talaga ng story nito, pero dahil sa magagaling nating writers, medyo [tweaked] ng konti: to give more color and more complexity 'yung takbo ng istorya.” Find out how music, fame and dreams interconnect the love and lives of Sarah, Joanna, Eric and Marco.
