#PRIDE: 6 Filipino LGBT Movies to watch this coming Pride Month

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

We may still have a long way to go when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, but that doesn't mean we can't delve into the experience.

Paolo Ballesteros

Fortunately for us, our local cinema has made quite an effort in portraying the colorful rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

So, from relatable romances to heart-wrenching classics, we've listed down a few movies to binge on this coming June to celebrate the rainbow-filled lives of the LGBTQ+ community.

1. Die Beautiful

One of the best Filipino films of 2016, Die Beautiful revolves around the life of Trisha (Paolo Ballesteros), a transgender woman who dreams of winning a beauty pageant. The movie follows her life story and the unique and (sometimes) misunderstood struggles of the community.

2. Baka Bukas

Baka Bukas features the life of a lesbian girl named Alex (Jasmine Curtis-Smith) who is out to everyone except her best friend. The story breaks the mold of the stereotypical “tomboy” and clearly shows the difficulties of having to come out to the people who mean the most.

3. Miss Bulalacao

This sci-fi comedy film revolves around a gay teenager named Dodong who is somehow impregnated by aliens. The core of Miss Bulalacao centers on the universal message of love and acceptance no matter what gender, religion, and womanhood.

4. Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros

A cult classic, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is a coming-of-age film about a gay teen who is torn between his love for a young cop and his loyalty to his family. He is then subject to the ruthless social realities of the adult world and is forced to grow up and emerge not exactly unscathed but definitely unbowed.

5. Bwakaw

Bwakaw is a 2012 comedy-drama that centers around Rene (Eddie Garcia), a lonely gay man in his 70's who cares for a stray dog he names 'bwakaw.' The movie is a graceful little tale that displays a sweet relationship between man and man's best friend contradicting the idea that being gay naturally goes with being unhappy.

6. Rainbow Sunset

Lastly, is Rainbow Sunset that tells the story of former senator Ramon Estrella (Eddie Garcia), an 84-year-old man who comes out as gay to his children in his senior years in order to care for his cancer-stricken lover. Beyond being an LGBT-themed movie, it is also a family drama that shows love for family rises above and beyond any conflict.
