Direk Joyce gives in sa gusto ng mga viewers

Bb. Joyce Bernal is back where she wants to be—directing drama. Pero ibang challenge naman ang hinaharap ng director ngayon: ang pagbalanse sa gusto ng kanyang audience at ng integrity ng kanyang show. Ano ang mas matimbang? Directing Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes for the third time, Bb. Joyce Bernal should now be having an easy time. After all, alam na niya ang kakayahan ng mga aktor niya; she just has to push the right buttons, figuratively, para ma-exceed pa ng dalawa ang expectations ng mga tao.
Pero, first, kailangan niya munang pabalikin ang fans ng tandem ni Dingdong at Marian, who have yet to catch the allure of Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang.
"Kasi 'yung structure niya, the way it was presented, meron kaming buong kwento, pero dapat ganito lang 'yung ibibigay," explain ni Binibining Joyce. She tells us na medyo filmic ang treatment sa soap, "so medyo mag-iisip ka talaga." But from the reaction of the audience, parang hindi ito ang gusto nila. So Direk Joyce and the creative team have to course-correct the flow of the story. Binibining Joyce shares na they're now giving the audience what they want, which is the whole back story. "Kumbaga sa pagkain, nilagay mo na lahat diyan: ulam, kanin, tubig, dessert, ganoon—dapat nakikita na nilang lahat 'yun. And then, bahala na sila kung paano nila kakainin." Through the revelations, she says she hopes to gain back the television viewers who fell in love with MariMar and Dyesebel: "'Yun nga, sa revelations. 'Yun 'yung gusto nilang maintindihan kaagad, eh: Saan nanggagaling? Bakit ganito? Gusto nila, 'yung mga mystery. Gusto na nilang i-unravel kaagad. Kasi naiinip sila; they want to know the story behind [the characters], eh supposedly 'yun sana 'yung mystery ng buong soap."
So because that's what the televiewers want, Binibining Joyce says the have no choice: "Ina-unravel na namin. Sila 'yung masusunod." But still, she wants to keep the integrity of the soap's original story flow. Kung paano ito nagsimula, sa misteryo at palaisipan, gusto ni Binibining Joyce na dito pa rin magpatuloy ang takbo ng story, while giving the audience what they want: the revelations. Ika nga ng director, "I still want to keep kung ano man 'yung first understanding [ko] of the soap opera; I still want to keep it that way." Now on its fourth week, Binibining Joyce says of Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang that viewers should expect the revelations hanggang next week—kasi hanggang doon pa lang din ang scripts na hawak nila. And because of the revelations, bawas muna ng suspense ng kaunti. "Hindi kami puwedeng mag-treatment ng ganoon; pero later on, 'pag nagkaroon na ulit sila ng chase, kasi this is love on the run eh, parang ganoon, so 'pag nagpunta na kami ulit doon, isu-suspense na ulit namin. "Ganoon pa rin 'yung touch na gagawin namin, suspense-love story 'to. Mysterious pa rin." Coming from the fantaserye that was Dyesebel, Binibinging Joyce says she's happier sa bagong soap—even with the hitches. "Nakakapagod pala talaga ang fantaserye. Gusto ko, ganito lang sana, medyo payapa." And though napagod ang direktor sa light soap of her previous series, aminado siya na "super light" ang characters doon unlike sa Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang: "Heto, mas medyo complicated ang characters. Hindi masyado nalalaman kung saan nanggaling, [although] unti-unti na kaming nagre-reveal ng mga secrets nila." Kaya naman after this soap, ayaw munang isipin ni Binibining Joyce ang susunod niyang gagawin. Although, she already has a general vision. "Gusto ko sana, at least maka-dalawa o tatlong movies ako this year," pag-amin niya. "Kesa dalawang soap, mas makarami sana ako sa movies this year." Will she want to direct Marian and Dingdong in a film din? "Oo naman!" We'll have to watch out for that one, kung ganoon. In the meantime, we'll keep tuning in gabi-gabi sa Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang to see kung anong mga changes ang mai-implement sa pagkakalatag ng story nito. Magugustuhan na kaya ng TV audiences ang bagong format? We'll see.
