First-time pageant host si Iza Calzado

March 7 is the coronation night of the 2009 Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant. Quite a controversial year because of the roster of participants, the prestigious show is aptly hosted by the equally controversial actress, Iza Calzado. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez, Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio
Halatang excited si Iza Calzado nang makausap siya ng iGMA tungkol sa mga bago niyang projects. Nakapagpahinga ng ilang buwan si Iza after her Joaquin Bordado stint, and now that she is back in the limelight, kitang-kita ang kakaibang Iza. Tanned and trim, ibang-iba ang aura ng actress nang humarap siya sa press during a pocket interview organized by GMA Artist Center. Nagkuwento si Iza about her new primetime soap, ang All About Eve, at ang kanyang preparations for Binibining Pilipinas 2009. “Ngayong March magkita- kita tayo sa Araneta Coliseum para sa Binibining Pilipinas. Hindi ho ako kasali ha -- ako ho ay host. Magkalinawan lang po tayo,” ang natatawang paglilinaw ng aktres. Idinagdag pa niya na first time niyang gagawin ito kaya naman pinaghandaan niyang mabuti ang pagsabak sa entablado opposite Paolo Bediones who is a veteran when it comes to hosting beauty pageants. “First time akong magho-host. Kinakabahan ako. Meron akong mga preparation -- may workshop ako with Direk Freddie Santos, just for hosting, kasi never kong inaral talaga ito, parang nabigyan lang ako ng mga hosting gigs, throughout the years,” ang pag-amin ni Iza sa iGMA. Dagdag pa ng All About Eve lead actress, “I’ve never learned the basics or the principles of what hosting is about. Ngayon parang sobrang natutuwa ako. After one-and-a-half to two hours with Direk Freddie, parang I feel like I’ve learned so much, so nakakatuwa.” Inamin din ni Iza na plano niyang panoorin ang mga past Binibining Pilipinas to prepare herself sa coronation night.
“I’m about to watch the past episodes, kasi hindi ako nakakapanood, except for the time that I judged. That was my first real experience with Binibining Pilipinas and I’m glad because having been one of the judges in the past, nakita ko rin kung anong sistema nila,” ang paliwanag ni Iza na obviously excited and ready to meet the finalists. “Hindi ko nakita 'yung behind the scenes (when I was a judge). Hindi ko nakapanayam 'yung mga contestants na talagang personal which I plan to do now, so that I can talk about them with sincerity and enthusiasm,” ang huling pahayag ni Iza who is really ready to put into practice what she has learned from the renowned stage director Freddie Santos.
