Direk Joey Reyes asks fans why Filipinos love K-dramas; gets funny replies

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

A curious Direk Joey Reyes pondered over the internet yesterday, April 9, about the effect of K-dramas or Koreanovelas on Filipinos.

That's why he took to Twitter yesterday to ask his followers, “What makes Koreanovelas such favorites for Filipinos?”

The post garnered so much traction that led fans to answer Direk Joey's tweet.

A few netizens claimed that they liked the storylines, cinematography, and the fact that each series ends up to 16 to 20 episodes only.

One netizen enumerated, “Storylines are original and compelling even if K-drama cliches are present.

"Cinematography, OST (Original Soundtrack), actors and actresses are not in love teams that they have freedom to work with each other, 16 episodes, and location!”

To which he replied, “Super agree! Love teams are not the selling point!”

Another netizen suggested that the Philippines should try coming up with a historical teleserye, researched and produced, because he was so caught with Jewel in the Palace, a K-drama that was aired in GMA back in 2005.

The director explained, “They tried pero mahirap talaga at magastos. Isa pa, daily ang telenovelas natin.

"It is called horizontal programming kaya ang daling lumaylay at maumay. At higit sa lahat, mag-repeat ng story pati dialogue.”

A few others also shared their own observations like kontrabidas, kabit and amnesia plotlines aren't prominent in K-dramas.

Lastly a netizen asked the acclaimed Pinoy director whether there's a chance for Filipino dramas to be at par with the genre.

He generously answered, “Meron naman pero nasa audience rin naman kasi.

“Kapag naramdaman ng producers natin na hindi na ito ang gusto ng 'nakararami,' siguradong maghahanap sila ng paraan para baguhin ang nakagawian.”

Based on history, Korean dramas started broadcasting in the Philippines in 2003 with GMA Network airing Bright Girl starring Jang Na Ra, Jang Hyuk, Han Eun Jung, and Ryu Soo Young.

In GMA-7, the highest rated Korean dramas are as following: Full House, Stairway to Heaven, Jewel in the Palace, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Endless Love: Autumn in My Heart, Endless Love: Winter Sonata, and Jumong--all housed under Heart of Asia.
