'Mano Po 6': A lesson on betrayal and forgiveness

A story of betrayal, forgiveness and unconditional love, this is the central theme of ‘Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love’. At ito ay natataon sa panahon ng Kapaskuhan, when everybody comes home for Christmas. Text by Erick Mataverde. Additional text and photos courtesy of Regal Films. Simula pa noong 2002, the critically-acclaimed Mano Po series has provided us a look into the culturally rich lives of the Chinese community in the Philippines. At ang Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love continues this tradition. This is a film that provides us a glimpse into the history of our Chinese ancestors and the different trials their hardy people had to undergo to pursue the promise of a better life in the Philippines. Mano Po 6 attempts to involve us across three generations of Chinese heritage – simula sa istorya ni Jin Feng, played by Boots Anson Roa; to her half-Filipino daughter, Melinda Chen, portrayed by Ms. Sharon Cuneta; and to the present ambitious and rebellious drive of Stephanie Uy, effectively portrayed by Heart Evangelista. Dennis Trillo, bilang si Daniel Chan, a shady and deceptive character whom Stephanie falls in love with, likewise, gives the film a dark side to the otherwise colorful depiction of the Chinese culture. At inamin naman ni Dennis that his role as Daniel opposite Heart ay naging kakaibang challenge for him. Ramdam na ramdam din natin mula kay Heart ang malalim na poot at galit ni Stephanie kay Melinda, at ito ay dahil pinaghandaan niya talaga itong movie ng mabuti. "Excited ako na makatrabaho si Ms. Sharon," Heart declared during the movie's press conference. "Nung binasa ko 'yung script, alam na namin na marami akong magiging highlight with the Megastar. Kaya talagang pinag-aralan ko 'yung role." Kapansin-pansin din ang emosyon na ipinakita ni Glaiza de Castro as the young and lost Melinda Chen-Uy, who would be, on the onset of her life, an outcast looking for acceptance from society and her own children. Siyempre, ang powerhouse cast na ito ay complemented din by equally talented stars tulad nila Drama King Christopher de Leon, Zsa Zsa Padilla, JC de Vera, Ciara Sotto, Arthur Solinap, Zoren Legaspi, Nina Jose, Ryan Eigenmann, and with the special participation of Ms. Kris Aquino. Kaya kung isang makabagbag damdaming istorya ang hanap ninyo, as proven by the awards that they have received (Best Actress- Ms, Sharon Cuneta, Best Supporting Actress- Heart Evangelista and Best Director, Joel Lamangan), look no further than Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love, showing in cinemas now!
