BLACKPINK shares details of Netflix documentary 'BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky'

A day before the premiere of their upcoming Netflix documentary, K-pop girl group BLACKPINK held an online press conference and fan event to talk about their film's details.

Titled “BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky,” the documentary will tell the story of how the quartet rose to fame after their debut in 2016. The film is directed by Caroline Suh, known for making “Salt Fat Acid Heat” and will feature never-before-scene footage of the singers' life behind the camera.

Director Caroline Suh joined the K-pop idols during the press conference and confessed that she only found out about the genre through her nephew.

“I didn't know much about BLACKPINK either, but I became in charge of this documentary,” she said, as reported by Soompi.

“As a Korean-American who is very interested in Korea, I looked up all the data about BLACKPINK, and afterward, I realized I must do this. They're much cooler than I am, and I really enjoyed working with them.

“Someone asked me what the hardest part of this process was, but I actually found it to be fascinating and fun.

Caroline added, “What I learned from BLACKPINK was that it was a success achieved by hard work and that they always did their best.

“I could see that each member was strong-willed, powerful, and always doing their best to achieve their dreams.”

During the hour-long event, Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé shared their thoughts on making the documentary and said that it was a wonderful opportunity for fans to see a different side of them.

Jennie explained, “It was a new experience for us to see the past that we had forgotten. We've been showing our glamorous road to stardom, but we wanted to capture our daily lives this time.

“I think BLINKS have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.”

Rosé added, “We wanted to tell our stories honestly, so we spoke in the language we are most comfortable in. Jenny and I grew up in foreign countries, so we spoke English. Meanwhile, Lisa spoke Thai.

"We speak many languages, and I think that diversity represents us.”

According to streaming site Netflix, BLACKPINK is the first Korean girl group to be added to their growing collection of documentaries, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga.

“It's an honor to be beside these global artists. The four of us have been continuously working hard, and we're going to reveal all of our efforts to you,” Jisoo said.

When asked about their future goals after the documentary's release, the group said, “We're not afraid of new challenges.

“We've been thinking about what else we can do next, and since we've shown how music is extendable content, we would like to delve more into that. Ten years from now, I think we'll be having a meeting without losing our own style.”
