Heart Evangelista helps raise awareness for domestic violence against women

Kapuso star Heart Evangelista called on the public through social media to take a stand against domestic violence.

“This pandemic isn't the only thing we are fighting this lockdown. With COVID-19 causing many to stay indoors, there's an increased risk for women to suffer gender-based violence (GBV) within their homes,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Statistics show that at least one out of every four Filipinas has experienced some type of abuse whether it be verbal, emotional, or physical. This shouldn't be ignored any longer. We are taking a stand now.”

Heart also posted on Facebook a series of infographics on the warning signs of domestic violence and a hotline where abused women can call to report their situation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that violence against women has increased during the pandemic due to a number of reasons including financial problems and health stress.

A study by Plan International Philippines, a humanitarian and women's right group, showed how the current situation has impacted the physical, emotional, and mental state of young girls and women in general.

Their findings revealed that verbal abuse is the most common form of violence against women.

This is followed by emotional and physical violence, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation online.

The group recommended providing adequate facilities and programs such as providing support teams where women can report domestic and online violence, access to contraceptives, hygiene kits, sanitary pads, and birth control essentials.
