Hugot lines in educational materials? Direk Joey Reyes finds it 'infuriating'

Acclaimed director and lecturer Jose Javier Reyes, or more popularly known as Direk Joey Reyes, is not amused when he saw an educational material using popular movie hugot lines to teach the Filipino language.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Direk Joey shared how infuriated he was with the material.

“What kind of vision and even professionalism exist among those in charge of education in this country if the teaching of language is based on identifying 'hugot lines' and 'quotable quotes' from local movies, and asking who rendered these dialogue?” he asked.

“What sort of learning expectations and deliverables are found here, or did whoever made this module think that involving popular culture trivia is an effective way to teach a language?”

Direk Joey reiterated how “disgusted” he feels looking at the module to the point that he concocted a new term for those who have followed the same teaching style.

“I work in media, I work in the academe, and, as I said, I am not only disgusted but infuriated and demoralized by the educational standards being shown to Filipino students.

“How can we develop a nation of critical thinkers whereas some of those who were given the responsibility of shaping the minds of the young are in dire need of brains and even dedication to their work as well?”

He continued, “Thus today, I have concocted a new term: 'EDIOTS.' Idiots in Education.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, schools, both public and private, have implemented the distance learning approach where teachers and students interact remotely during instruction.

The distance learning approach makes use of self-learning materials or printed learning modules, similar to the one that Direk Joey Reyes posted on his Facebook account.
