EXCLUSIVE: Ruby Rodriguez shares experience in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic

By Cherry Sun

Ruby Rodriguez shared her observation on how people in the US are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ruby flew to the US with her husband Mark Aquino and son AJ early in September. Despite the risk of traveling abroad, the Eat Bulaga dabarkad and Owe My Love star had to leave the country for her son's medical needs as well as to check on her daughter Toni.

She explained during the story conference of the upcoming Kapuso series, “I really had to leave and check on my daughter, 'saka 'yung son ko kasi for his medical, dito kasi 'yun. Kasi rare 'yung sakit ng anak ko.

"But I'm not the only one who's here now. Lovi Poe is also here in the US, magkasama kami dito sa California. We'll have the same flight going home.”

While in America, Ruby claimed she and her family strictly followed safety protocols that have been practiced here in the Philippines since the start of the quarantine.

She said, “Dito kasi mas natatakot kami. That's why… dito sa bahay, wala kaming mask pero the moment lumabas ako ng pinto, naka-mask na kami kaagad kasi mas malaki ang California. It's number one in the world when it comes to COVID[-19]. So it's kinda scary and they're very open.

"You can eat at restaurants, although ang restaurants dito sa labas. Ang dining dito sa California kasi mas strict kasi nga mas malala.”

They also spent a few days in Las Vegas to visit her relatives, and she noticed the stark behavior among the people in the city.

Ruby shared, “Doon talaga, oh my God, naglalakad mga tao, casinos are open, walang mask. Tapos may indoor dining sila. Sabi ko, 'Ano 'to?' Tinitingnan kami ng mga tao kasi kami balot na balot.

"Siyempre, we're protecting ourselves so when we arrived there, medyo sanay na kami sa nakatago. Like when I got here sa US, we were not required for a 14-day quarantine. Wala eh, wala 'yung self-quarantine. You're not required.”

The Kapuso star also highlighted that she, along with Mark and AJ, were not required to go under quarantine when they arrived in the US. However, they still decided to isolate themselves from their relatives.

She related, “Nag-hotel kami just to protect my siblings and all my relatives. I know I didn't have it kasi before we left, kailangan nang i-test 'di ba? Pero prinotect namin sila para sigurado. So when we got out, they knew that we're really safe.”
