New book chronicles the Eraserheads' 2009 'The Final Set' concert

By Bong Godinez

On March 7, 2009, the Eraserheads reunited in front of a massive sellout crowd at the SM MOA Concert Grounds. The iconic concert is now immortalized in a new book titled: Alternate Endings: The Making of The Final Set and the Unmaking of an Era.

The reunion concert, dubbed as "The Final Set," was supposed to be their final performance as a group following their breakup in 2002 and the abrupt ending of their first reunion gig on August 30, 2008.

The concert was later aired by GMA-7 on April 5, 2009.

That memorable concert is now the subject of a new book written by journalist and musician Aldus Santos and designed by Gelo Lagasca.

The book, Alternate Endings: The Making of The Final Set and the Unmaking of an Era, also features a foreword written by Eraserheads frontman and songwriter Ely Buendia.

The book is a project by Ely's independent record label Offshore Music.

“A decade after the record-breaking concert, relive the excitement once again,” wrote Offshore Music on Instagram.

“The complete official account of one of the greatest shows in Philippine music history, chock-full of trivia, hundreds of never before seen behind-the-scenes photos and interviews, anyone who was there (or wished they were there) will love this beautiful photo book.

“A great gift for the Eheads fan in your life.”

Offshore Music first dropped a cryptic post as a teaser on December 7 before making a full announcement hours later.

Fans instantly knew it was Eraserheads-related because of the inverted “E” and an aerial shot of the MOA Concert Grounds taken during "The Final Set" concert.

The post quickly generated various speculations among fans including a DVD release, online streaming of "The Final Set," a remastered album of the concert on CD or vinyl, a new record from the band, or perhaps another reunion concert.

None of these turned out to be true.

Nevertheless, a book that looks back on that historic night is enough to keep any Eraserheads fan happy this Christmas.

Alternate Endings: The Making of The Final Set and the Unmaking of an Era is priced at P2,800 and will be available on December 14.

Fans can order the limited-run book on Offshore Music's website.
