'Through Night and Day' is Netflix Philippines' top Filipino film for 2020

By Bong Godinez

Netflix Philippines has crowned Through Night and Day as the most popular Filipino film on its roster for the year 2020.

The movie, which stars Alessandra de Rossi and Kapuso actor Paolo Contis, made its debut on the streaming platform in July.

It quickly trended and maintained its strong showing for months despite the influx of more Filipino movies on the platform this year.

Through Night and Day's surprising success on online TV more than made up for its dismal performance in theaters when it was released nationwide in 2018.

The movie was pulled out of cinemas after only three days due to lack of promotion.

Alessandra felt that the pandemic provided the film the perfect opportunity to get noticed.

“Ito 'yung right time when everyone's at home, walang magawa and everyone needs pure love and understanding, no judgments, so ito na 'yun,” she said in a radio interview in July.

Other Filipino movies that performed very well on the streaming site are Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story, Finding Agnes, Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap, On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets, How She Left Me, and Just a Stranger, among others.

Pinoy viewers also consumed a lot of K-dramas on Netflix Philippines.

The King: Eternal Monarch emerged as the most-watched followed by Kingdom Season 2, Start-Up, It's Okay To Not Be Okay, The World of Married, Record of Youth, Extracurricular, The School Nurse Files, Itaewon Class, and Hi Bye, Mama!
