Fans of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender now have more reasons to celebrate this Christmas with the arrival of The Legend of Korra in streaming giant Netflix today, December 15.

This popular American animated television series created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino follows the events 70 years after the Avatar: The Last Airbender, wherein a new waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra is proclaimed as the next Avatar after Aang.

The new chapter explores the life of Korra and her adventures in Republic City together with her buddies, firebender Mako and earthbender Bolin.

What's more, viewers will be able to meet Avatar Aang and Katara's son Tenzin, who is Korra's airbending teacher.

But what exactly is the role of an Avatar?

The Avatar's main mission is to maintain balance and harmony between the four nations and act as a mediator between humans and spirits.

When an Avatar dies, he will be reincarnated into the next nation following the Avatar cycle.

In addition, people will be treated to the amazing relationship between Korra and the female character Asami.

HuffPost wrote in 2014 that creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino confirmed via their Tumblr account that the two heroines were a couple.

Konietzko wrote in his Tumblr account, “You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story.”

Meanwhile, DiMartino added, “Our intention with the last scene was to make it as clear as possible that yes, Korra and Asami have romantic feelings for each other.”

Fans of Nickelodeon's Avatar series erupted with excitement online to finally see Korra in action. It originally ran in Nickelodeon from 2012 to 2014.

The animated series was also turned into a movie in 2010. M. Night Shyamalan directed The Last Airbender'which stars Noah Ringer as Aang.

Also joining him in the cast were Dev Patel, Nicola Peltz, and Jackson Rathbone from the Twilight movie.

Shyamalan's adaptation of the popular children's TV series received a thumbs down from fans and critics alike.

In an article by the Guardian.com in 2010, it reported that The Last Airbender received a rating of 8% "rotten" on the reviews aggregator site rottentomatoes.com.
