FAMAS Best Actress Janine Gutierrez: 'Stories of oppression and injustice need to be heard.'

By Bong Godinez

“I am so thankful and over the moon.”

This is how Janine Gutierrez described her feeling in an Instagram post last night, December 21, and a day after winning Best Actress at the 68th FAMAS Awards.

The Kapuso actress won the coveted award for her impressive performance in the action-thriller movie, Babae at Baril, written and directed by Rae Red.

“Maraming maraming salamat sa lahat ng bumubuo ng FAMAS Awards sa parangal na ibinigay ninyo,” she wrote.

“FAMAS Best Actress - a dream!!! Salamat po,” Janine enthused before thanking all the people who made the movie possible.

In total, Babae at Baril won four awards including Best Cinematography and Best Scoring.

For Janine, this latest recognition came a month after winning the Best Actress award for the same movie at the 43rd Gawad Urian.

Janine also expressed her thoughts on the current issues happening in the country.

“Your [FAMAS] recognition of our film - and so many others like Aswang, F***bois, Kalel, 15, and more - is validation that these stories of oppression and injustice need to be heard.”

Janine's sentiments came as media outlets and social media were filled with news about the double murder in Paniqui, Tarlac on December 20 involving an off-duty policeman and a mother and son.

The shooting incident was caught on video and has gone viral.

Social media was filled overnight with the hashtags #StopTheKillingsPH, #JusticeForSonyaGregorio, and #EndPoliceBrutality.

Many celebrities including Maine Mendoza and Bianca Gonzalez have reacted to the news, demanding accountability and justice for the victims.

“A year after making this, I wish things have gotten better but they haven't,” wrote Janine.

“Every day, so much violence happens in the Philippines at ang palaging nabibiktima ay ang walang laban. Ilan pa ang kailangang masaktan?”

Babae at Baril follows the story of a saleslady who stumbles on a gun on her doorstep one evening.

The discovery changes her perception and confidence as she realizes the immense power that comes with owning a gun.

The movie was released last year and was screened internationally as well including the 19th New York Asian Film Festival and Luang Prabang Film Festival.

Actress Lotlot de Leon congratulated her daughter Janine for the award by posting on Instagram: “Anak, I am so proud of you! God is truly good! You deserve this anak for all the hard work!”

Janine will soon be seen in the movie Dito at Doon with actor JC Santos.

This year's installment of the FAMAS was staged online.

The online ceremony demonstrated how the film industry is embracing new methods to alleviate the crippling effect of the pandemic.
