The search for the next K-pop sensation is on--and it might come from the U.S.
Big Hit Entertainment--the mega Korean talent agency behind the K-pop phenomenon, BTS --has announced its partnership with giant music label Universal Music Group (UMG) to collaborate on multiple projects.
In a statement released by UMG, the said partnership will see the two companies “work closely together to increase opportunities for artists through innovation and technology, whilst expanding the global reach of K-pop music and culture around the world.”
Part of the deal is for UMG artists to explore “direct to fan” communications using Big Hit's Weverse, a platform that lets avid fans interact, share, engage, access new content, and purchase merchandise items from their favorite artists.
The two brands also announced a global audition to be telecast and in the form of a reality competition show or a la American Idol.
The goal: to find the next K-pop group, and, if lucky, the new BTS.
What's unique about the program is that it would give global audiences a look into the grueling and efficient training commonly practiced by South Korean agencies in developing raw K-pop hopefuls.
That new K-pop group will then be taken in by the new music label, JV, which is run by Big Hit and UMG's Geffen Records--the iconic record label that released the albums of John Lennon, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Avicii, and home to current breakthrough artist, Olivia Rodrigo, among others.
“With their innovative approach to developing artists and embracing new technology, Big Hit has become one of the most dynamic companies in music entertainment,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG.
“We're thrilled to be working together as we launch a new joint venture between our companies that will further accelerate K-pop as a global cultural phenomenon.”
Lenzo Yoon, Big Hit's Global CEO, added, “We will strive to secure competitive platform leadership and develop a top group of artists through the close partnership between our two companies, enabling K-pop to transcend all borders and languages.
“This project is especially significant as it will apply Big Hit's 'success formula' established over the past 16 years to the U.S., the center of the global music market.”
