'Squid Game' star O Yeong-su bags Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor

Veteran South Korean actor O Yeong-su, popularly known for his role as Oh Il-nam in the Netflix breakout series Squid Game, earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-series or TV-Movie on Monday, January 9 (PHT) in Los Angeles, California.

For Yeong-su's first-ever win at an international awards show, he bested Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of The Morning Show, Kieran Culkin of Succession, and Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso.

Squid Game also earned a nomination for Best Drama Series, while its lead star Lee Jung-jae was vying for Best Drama Actor.

Jung-jae declined from attending the show following Netflix's boycott of the Golden Globes, along with concerns surrounding the coronavirus and quarantine protocols, his agency confirmed on Wednesday, January 5.

The 79th Golden Globes was privately held with no live-stream or red carpet after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) came under public scrutiny for its racially exclusive group of Golden Globe voters. Hollywood stars and media giants joined forces for a protest that called for organizational reform in the HFPA.

Last year, the awards show's long-time broadcaster NBC dropped its plans of televising the event in solidarity with the protest.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023,” it announced.
