5 Doh Kyungsoo shows to watch in preparation for his acting comeback

By Kimberlie Conde

Although some K-pop idols have a reputation for mediocre actors whose skills are only compensated by their good looks, this was never the case for EXO's main vocalist Doh Kyungsoo. In fact, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has chosen him to be part of “Korean Actors 200” together with other prestigious actors to represent the present & future of the Korean Film Industry, globally.

They even described him as someone who has "magical eyes that transparently reflect the character's soul. A "swing actor" with a gigantic presence. Having said all of that, it is no longer a surprise that he is booked and busy this 2022 as he has two confirmed movies (The Moon and Secret) and one series (True Swordsmanship) all set to be released this year.

From astronaut to pianist to prosecutor, we surely are getting a lot of Kyungsoo and we are confident that his name will be bigger than ever. But before all of that happens, here are 5 of his dramas/ films you can watch to remind you of just how good an actor he really is.

My Annoying Brother

This movie is about a jailed swindler (Jo Jung-sok) who jumps at the chance to earn parole in exchange for taking care of his estranged brother (Doh Kyungsoo), an athlete who recently lost his eyesight.

Doh Kyungsoo's performance here is so exceptional that he won the prestigious Blue Dragon Award for Best New Actor. Don't be fooled by the trailer because this is not your typical comedy. Bring on the tissues because you will surely find yourself on a roller-coaster of emotions, but it's definitely worth the watch.

Pure Love

Pure Love reminisces a group of friends' last summer spent together. This movie takes a nice trip full of nostalgia into the adventures and misadventures of five teenagers.

Another tearjerker on the list, who could forget the iconic "no-kiss" kissing scene of Kyungsoo and Kim So-hyun? If you are a teenager who grew up in the '90s, this movie will resonate with you well.

Be Positive

This web drama is a story about Hwan Dong (Doh Kyungsoo,) a film major whose script wins a grand prize. Unfortunately for him, he can only get funding from his university if he will be able to convince his ex-girlfriend-turned-actress to play the main role in his production.

One of the web dramas with the highest number of views, it is so hilarious to finally see Kyungsoo funny for once. With only 6 episodes running for 10 minutes short, this is perfect for those who are not looking to sit down for hours binge watching dramas.

Hello Monster

Are criminals born or are they created? Are there people who are innately monsters? This is by far one of the best psychological thrillers you will come across in the K-Drama world as each episode keeps you on the edge of your seats.

Doh Kyungsoo portrayed the young version of the villain. Although he only appeared for two episodes, he left a deep impression on the viewers. His chilling interpretation of a psychopath eventually cemented him as one of the most versatile idol-actors of his generation.

Swing Kids

Roh Ki Soo (Doh Kyungsoo) is a young North Korean soldier who was held in the prison camp. There, he falls in love with tap dancing while trying to distract himself from the hardships of wars.

Even if he has already shown off his moves as a member of EXO, fans can't help but be amazed by how flawless his tap dancing skills are. His hard work surely paid off as it took him five months to practice and reach the level he does in the film. This movie also brought out the best in him and it is easily one of his most phenomenal works to date. Once you've seen Swing Kids, you will know that Kyungsoo is the real deal and he got a bright future ahead of him.

If there is one thing that sets Doh Kyungsoo apart from his idol-actor counterparts is his willingness to step out of his comfort-zone by constantly challenging his acting range with the roles he chooses to portray. Indeed, we can't wait to see more of him this 2022!
