Let’s Hear It For The Girl!

Being a singing sensation has already given Kyla five albums, successful concerts and more. So what’s next for the R & B Princess? Text by: Jason John S. Lim, Photos by: Michelle S. Mauricio Things might be quiet on Kyla’s camp at the moment, but that’s not a sign of inactivity. It can only mean the something new is brewing with Kyla that will take the Philippine music industry by storm! During a break at the popular Sunday concert show SOP, we interviewed Kyla about her career as a singer and what her fans can expect next from her. And the R & B Princess tells us that she is currently working on her new album, her sixth, which doesn’t have a set release date yet. “We're starting to gather materials as early as now,” Kyla says of the album. “And I’m starting to write again!” The charming singer says that writing her own songs makes it more personal, but that’s not to say that the ones she didn’t write aren’t special to her as well. She explains that it just gives her a wonderful feeling to compose her own songs. And receiving checks for them as well. She shares, “Sobra kong saya nung first time kong nakatanggap na check for the "Beautiful Days" na song. Wow! Nakaupo lang ako tapos may check na ako. Ang sarap ng feeling.” Aside from her own songs though, we asked Kyla who she would want to collaborate with again for her new album. She replies, “Actually I've worked with (some of) the best composers (already), like Keith Martin, Ogie Alcasid and Janno Gibbs.” But the singer also tells us that she’d love to sing something from Gary Valenciano as well. And speaking of Mr. Pure Energy, Kyla has worked with him before singing a duet with him. If she was given a choice, who would she want to sing duets with on her next album? “Lahat ng kasama ko sa SOP. Sina Kuya Ogie, Kuya Janno, Ate Jaya, si Ate ( Regine naka-duet ko na), kasi magagaling silang lahat. And it will always be a pleasure singing a song with them in an album.” And since we couldn’t get information on the new album yet, we continued on with Kyla’s hypothetical album. If she were to decide on everything. If she were to have an all-revival album, ala Regine Velasquez, what songs would she pick to be in the album? “Gusto ko ng 70’s na songs, or early 90’s,” Kyla answers after mulling the question over. She explains, “Yung 70’s kasi na music (ay) sobrang alive and happy. Basta sobrang daming magandang songs. Ang sarap i-revive and i-rearrange, (at ang) sarap paglaruan.” We ask what songs in particular would she sing and she replies, “Mga songs ng Blackstreet, yung kumanta ng “In A Rush”. And “All For Love”.” This hypothetical album is definitely sounding spectacular! As for the real deal, stay tuned to SOP every Sunday and here on iGMA for announcements from Kyla herself about the status of her upcoming album!
