As the entire world condemns his action, award-winning American actor Will Smith issued an apology to Chris Rock following the former's infamous slap at the latter at the recently concluded Oscars.
Will fired a slap at Chris after the latter made a "joke" about the actor's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss.
In an Instagram post on Monday evening, Will agreed that indeed, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” he added.
He also issued his apology to the prestigious award-giving body, to all of its distinguished attendees and everyone around the world who witnessed his outburst.
"I would like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show and everyone watching around the globe," Will said.
"I would also like to apologize to the William's family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been a gorgeous journey for all of us," he added.
He humbly capped his apology with, "I am a work in progress."
Yet in the heat of the slapping incident, Will did not apologize to Chris when he accepted the award for Best Actor. It was only after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which administers the awards, vehemently denounced the singer-actor's outburst that stunned viewers all over the world and subsequently, overshadowed the Oscars.
"The academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show," the film organization said in a statement.
"We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequence in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California Law," it added.
Accordingly, disciplinary actions based on the bylaws include "suspension of membership or expulsion from membership."
Meanwhile, numerous celebrities also decried Will's behavior.
Mia Farrow tweeted that it was by far the "Oscar's ugliest moment."
Director Rob Reiner said there is absolutely "no excuse" for Smith's action.
"One Tree Hill" star Sophia Bush said that "violence is never okay. Assault is never the answer." She however also called out Chris for making fun of Jada on the Oscars stage. She ended by saying "They both need a breather."
