LIST: Movies you can watch at the 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival

By Kristian Eric Javier

Christmas is just around the corner and aside from the usual traditions of Filipinos such as family gatherings, caroling, and enjoying the food and festivities, they can also get to enjoy local movies at the Metro Manila Film Festival.

Dubbed as “Balik Saya sa MMFF 2022,” the 48th edition of the annual film festival encourages moviegoers to support the eight official entries that feature different genres.

It can be remembered that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MMFF shifted to online streaming in 2020. Last year, the festival returned to cinemas.

Here are the eight movies participating in the 48th Metro Manila Film Festival:

Family Matters

A family-drama movie produced by Cineko Productions and features Noel Trinidad, Liza Lorena, Nonie Buencamino, Agot Isidro, Mylene Dizon James Blanco, and JC Santos.

The film is about elderly parents who, after a night of panic when one of them had a hard time breathing, had to be taken care of by their kids. It can be considered one of the two family films on the list

My Teacher

The movie features Eat Bulaga hosts Joey de Leon and former co-host Toni Gonzaga. Directed by Paul Soriano, My Teacher will be a heartwarming and feel-good movie giving tribute to teachers, based on its casts' teasers

Mamasapano: Now It Can Be Told

Directed by Lester Dimaranan, Mamasapano: Now It Can Be Told is based on the true story of the police operation in 2015 that claimed the lives of 44 Special Action Forces or SAF officers in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. This will star Edu Manzano, Aljur Abrenica, and Paolo Gumabao among others.

Deleter

No MMFF is complete without a horror movie. This year, it will be the techno-horror film starring Nadine Lustre, Louise Delos Reyes, and McCoy de Leon who will take the spot.

The film is about Nadine's character who works at a shadowy online content moderator office where they process and filter graphic uploads and prevent them from reaching social media platforms.

Nananahimik ang Gabi

Ian Veneracion. Heaven Peralejo and Mon Confiado star in this suspense thriller film directed by Shugo Praico. The story is about a sugar baby of a corrupt police chief and how their weekend getaways are interrupted by an intruder.

Labyu With An Accent

A romantic comedy film starring Coco Martin and Jodi Sta. Maria, plays the roles of two people coming from different backgrounds. Directed by Rodel Nacianceno, the movie is about the romantic encounter of the two characters and their interactions.

Partners in Crime

Comedian-host Vice Ganda and vlogger-turned-actress Ivana Alawi star in this comedy film. Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, the story revolves around how an ex-couple met again and became involved in a crime.

My Father, Myself

This movie starring Jake Cuenca, Dimples Romana, and Sean de Guzman is the most intriguing among the entries. Directed by Joel Lamangan, the movie tells the story of a young boy, adopted into a family. The boy falls in love with his stepfather while his step-sister falls in love with him, while his stepmom deals with it all.

This year, the chosen eight movies, or the Magic 8, will be shown in theaters from December 25 to January 7 nationwide. The festival's awarding ceremony called "Gabi Ng Parangal" will be held on December 27.
