Joaquin Domagoso overwhelmed by praises for his role in 'That Boy in the Dark'

By Kristian Eric Javier

Kapuso star Joaquin Domagoso was surprised by number of positive feedback about his portrayal of Knight in the movie That Boy in the Dark. In fact, the 21-year-old actor doesn't feel worthy of the praises he received.

“Sometimes I feel like it's too much 'cause they keep praising me, praising me over and over again, pero I still feel like I'm not that worthy na [bigyan ng] praise,” Joaquin said in an interview before the premiere night of his film on January 6.

He added, “Pero naniniwala ako na may nakakita ng galing ko. I hope na they did see that and thankful ako sa kanila.”

The Kapuso actor also said that he was overwhelmed by the pressure of being recognized in different film festivals, especially since most are from international ones.

“Parang mabigat kasi tipong ikaw na nagdadala ng pagka-Pinoy mo, di ba, kasi international e,” he said.

Before 2022 ended, Joaquin won best actor awards from three international film festivals. He was also hailed as the 'Iconic Young Actor Ace of the Year' and 'Promising Young Actor of the Year' in the local scene.

When asked about how he felt about being considered as an international artist, he replied, “Honestly, I still feel the same, I feel like I have a lot to improve on.”

He added, “It's all just labels, it's all just ideologies na I look like this but deep down, I'm still the same: the same guy that wants to do better, be a hard worker, and just be a happy person that spreads a good message and love to everybody."

For Joaquin, the most challenging part of making the film are doing the scenes themselves, and having to pretend to be blind.

“Lalo na yung you had to move around, hit objects intentionally but making look unintentional, yung mga ganun,” he added.

The actor also detailed what he called his “bad process” on how he acted out his scenes at first.

“Una, tine-testing ko siya, how that actually felt, getting hit on it. Then, I would remember the jolt and the pain, dun ko na siya kokopyahin,” he said.

However, director Adolfo Alix, Jr. reprimanded him for his process, saying that it's “not good acting.”

Joaquin remembered being told, “If you've already gotten a lot of experience doing the pretending to actually hit it, then you should have a sense of what it's like din. Just believe in yourself and magagawa mo.”

That Boy in the Dark is currently shows in cinemas nationwide.
