Ella Arcangel Awit ng Pangil at Kuko

'Ella Arcangel' combines Filipino folklore with societal ills.

Attention, Pinoy comic fans!

The fan favorite graphic novel Ella Arcangel Tomo Pangalawa: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko is poised for an anime rendition after securing funding from the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

“Magandang gabi! Ikinagagalak naming sabihin na magkakaroon ng pelikula na base sa tomo 2, Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko,” wrote the Facebook page Ella Arcangel.

Created by Julius Villanueva and Mervin Malonzo, Ella Arcangel Tomo Pangalawa: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko follows the story of Ella Arcangel, a young heroine with magical abilities.

The series is full of local myths and folklore as well as blood-thirsty policemen and abusive husbands with toxic masculinity.

A 2018 CNN Philippines article put Ella Arcangel Tomo Pangalawa: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko at number one among the best Filipino comics of 2018.

“The only missing element that keeps this series from becoming the next Trese or Harry Potter is a large following. Consider this our recommendation that Ella Arcangel is a comic book hero generations can love forever,” the article mentioned.

Interest in Filipino comic books especially among local readers has been buoyed by the success of the anime series Trese on Netflix.

Penned and illustrated by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo, Trese took Netflix by storm when it debuted on June 11, creating stir (and even debates) among Pinoy viewers.

“I hope that the story of 'Trese' will show young and old comic book creators that there is a way for their stories to reach a wider audience, a global audience,” Budjette told GMA Lifestyle when it was announced in 2020 that Trese will hit Netflix.

“We do have fantastic stories that I feel will blow away the minds and inspire readers and viewers around the world.”
