It has always been a musical experience to see Asia’s Songbird perform. Whether on stage or singing on television, Regine Velasquez has always given 100 percent. Thus it didn’t come as a surprise when her home network gave Regine her own musical show to showcase her talent and her songs. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez, Photos courtesy of GMA Network Starting tonight Songbird will be seen every Saturday to give way to a number of requests to move the show’s schedule to the weekend. Wanting to hear the songbird give life to timeless classics, the GMA management made the change and now Regine’s songs will be heard by a lot more viewers who are craving for a concert experience in the comfort of home. Songbird’s choice The format of the show makes it possible for Regine to showcase the songs of Regine’s favorite singers and composers. stars“I’ve always wanted to do a TV show na talagang magagawa ko 'yung [gusto ko] kasi sa concert ilang kanta lang din ang magagawa mo. Dito kasi ang dami mong puwedeng gawin, 'yung mga hindi ko nakakanta sa concert pwede kong gawin dito. Kaya excited na excited talaga ako dito,” was Regine’s animated description of her new show. She adds that every week she will focus on one artist or composer and will perform their masterpieces on stage. To date, Regine has already featured Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. Many are looking forward to the episode where she will sing Ogie Alcasid’s songs and some are even hoping that Regine will have a Sharon Cuneta episode. “We would love to guest her in one of the episodes, sana mapaunlakan niya kami,” says Regine rather hopefully. A musical for Regine It has been a long time since the last musical show has been aired on GMA. Many were pleasantly surprised in the decision of Regine’s home network to produce this kind of show for her. stars“Kasi nowadays din wala ng ganito, noon merong Vilma! Sharon! Manilyn! So parang ang ganda! I’ve always wanted to do a show like this but the thing is I never really asked for it naman,” Regine quickly clarifies. She also reassured everyone that her new show will not affect her performances in SOP. “We tape the show every Tuesday, Monday we rehearsed the songs for the taping at ang taping ko lang po ay sandali lang, two hours lang po. We finish two episodes at 8 p.m. so I still have time to rest,” explains Regine. So to Regine’s fans, the wait is over.
