From radio to TV, Sam YG is always ready to take on hosting jobs and gives his best to deliver what is expected.
This year, the Boys Night Out DJ was tapped to host an online show titled Nego King Philippines, which is a local adaptation of a successful South Korean YouTube show of the same title.
“It feels great, of course, to be chosen the host of Nego King Philippines. It's an honor kasi we all know that the show in Korea is such a success.
“But also, with that honor comes great responsibilities and great shoes to fill. So, I always love a good challenge. I believe that if you're in any industry, if you don't challenge yourself, hindi ka na maggo-grow. Regardless 'yan kung artista ka, marketing ka, finance department ka, it's always about growth,” said Sam YG in a quick chat with GMANetwork.com and other entertainment media after the press conference of the show held recently.
In this show, television and radio personality negotiates with company executives to lower product prices and come up with irresistible offers for the Filipino audience.
To further convince them, Sam roams the streets of Metro Manila to interact with potential customers to ask them how they feel about a certain product and what would make them purchase it. As the “Nego King,” Sam uses these customer sentiments to negotiate the best possible deals with CEOs and business owners, getting huge discounts or freebies that viewers can avail themselves.
Sam YG is grateful to have learned a lot from different kinds of hosting his previous gigs, which he's able to use in this new project.
“I did Eat Bulaga, 'tapos nag-MTV. And at that time, kasagsagan ng MTV, 'di ba? Sosyal-sosyalan, English-English. 'Tapos, dito ka nabato sa Eat Bulaga. Siyempre, ang kausap mo na 'yung mga security guards, dabarkads na. Siyempre, hindi mo na puwedeng sabihin na twenty-five centavos, gusto nila, beinte-singko. Totoo naman, iba ang lenggwahe.
“I think, that's where the dynamics has to be placed. Doon papasok 'yung shifting--study your audience, papaano mo sila lalapitan at kakausapin. Siyempre, kung ano ang language nila… parang we speak the same language, parang barkada ko lang 'to.”
Meanwhile, it's been 17 years since Sam YG started his hosting career. Throughout those years, Sam has done a lot of hosting jobs on radio, television, and even at events.
So, when asked how he would want to be remembered in this field, he answered, “I guess, if there's one word or few words that I want to be remembered, it's as someone who's dynamic. 'Yung kahit saan mo ibato 'yan, kaya niya. That's what I like about Nego King.
“One minute, kausap mo ang fishball vendor. The next minute, kausap mo ang CEO ng kumpanya, on the same day, in a span of three hours, mangyayari lahat yan. So, you're brain adjusts.
"So, I think, adaptable at saka dynamic. Aside from the energy, of course. Kailangan ang energy, yung wit, yung bilis ng pag-iisip.”
Meanwhile, Sam YG sees himself doing this job for even more years as it gives him a different kind of satisfaction other than the talent fee.
“I think, for me, at the end of the day, whether it's radio, podcast, or a game show, if I can put a smile on someone's face for one day, I think that the prize that money can't buy, no talent fee can buy.
“It's the feeling na, 'Napakinggan ko 'to, napanood ko 'to,' tuwang-tuwa ako, parang nawawala ang problema ko. Again, it's a feeling that money can't buy, it's a fulfillment,” he concluded.
