In a recent episode of I Juander, hosts and veteran journalists Susan Enriquez and Mark Salazar went all the way to the province of Vigan, Ilocos to join in the festivities of their famous Binatbatan Festival.
Atty. Glendale Benzon, Vigan City's Councilor, explained, “Binatbatan Festival is derived from the Ilocano word 'batbat' which is the process of separating yung cotton sa seeds niya sa cotton tree at yung cotton yung gagamitin sa paggawa ng Abel Iloko (fabric).”
During the said festival, Vigan residents champion their talent in creating the Abel Iloko fabric through the myriad of ways. One way they go about this is through their famous Binatbatan Street Dance Festival.
The street dance competition is the main highlight of the festival and is not only loved by most because of the fun and entertainment it provides audiences but it also shows the tedious process that comes with making their fabric.
For the dance competition, the participants create choreographies that highlight their beautiful and exquisite culture. They even dress in their own made Abel Iloko outfits. As they dance to the beat they're not only showing off their dancing skills but who they are as Ilokanos as well.
