
Bonnie Tyler, known for her hits "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," has passed away at the age of 75.
On her social media page, the Welsh singer's family sadly announced the news in a simple yet heartfelt post.
"Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for," they wrote.
"We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."
Last May, Bonnie was admitted to a hospital in Portugal for emergency surgery. She was later placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery.
On June 15, her family shared that the music icon had finally woken up from the coma. However, she remained in intensive care as she continued her recovery.
Bonnie Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins in South Wales in 1951, the fourth of six children of a coal miner and a homemaker.
She began her music career as a teenage backing singer before launching her solo career and releasing several albums in the 1970s.
Besides her two globally known songs, Bonnie also recorded hits such as "It's a Heartache," "Together," "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)"
"Total Eclipse of the Heart", which showcased her signature husky voice, earned her a Grammy Award nomination and became one of the defining songs of the 1980s.
