Biyahe ni Drew in Israel

Take a step back into biblical times courtesy of Biyahe ni Drew's 2016 visit to Israel.

The State of Israel is dubbed as the Holy Land for a good reason: it was the setting of major events that shaped faiths and religions.

For Christians, Israel is the place where the life and death of Jesus Christ unfolded.

For our Muslim brothers and sisters, Jerusalem - a city within Israel - is the location where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

In Judaism, Israel has long been considered as the ancestral and spiritual homeland of the Jews, with Jerusalem regarded as the holiest city in the Jewish faith.

With that said, it's no wonder that people from all parts of the world flock to Israel to explore its rich history and visit the many sacred sites around it.

In 2016, GMA's Biyahe ni Drew set foot on the Holy Land to see firsthand the various landmarks the country has to offer.

The good news is that Israel is visa-free for Filipinos, thanks to the strong bond between the two countries after former President Manuel Quezon offered the Philippines as a refuge to the Jews who were escaping the wrath of Nazi Germany during World War II.

The Philippines, this time through President Manuel Roxas, was the only Asian country that voted in favor of United Nations Resolution 181, paving the way for the creation of the State of Israel.

During the trip, our favorite Biyahero Drew Arellano visited many interesting and places with biblical significance such as St. Peter's Church, the ancient city of Jaffa, Cana of Galilee, Nazareth, Basilica of the Annunciation, Mouth of Temptation, and Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Drew also visited Yad Vashem, also known as the Holocaust Memorial or Mount of Remembrance. The place serves as a memorial site for Jews who perished under the Holocaust or the systematic killing of the Jews across German-occupied Europe from 1941 to 1945.

But more than the sites, the Israel trip provided viewers a glimpse of the local lifestyle, a bit of the country's history, and how its rich past intertwined with the present. Of course, the country's local cuisine was also one of the episode's highlights.
