Gourmands looking for the best restaurant experience on the planet should set their sights on Denmark as Copenhagen-based Noma took home the top spot on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
This is the restaurant's fifth time on top of the ranking. They had previously emerged on top during 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 before closing in 2016 and reopening in a new location in 2018. On the 2019 list, Noma ranked second.
After hearing of the win, Noma posted a video on its Instagram account showing its cheering employees.
The World's 50 Best Restaurants described Noma as having “groundbreaking seasonal cuisine and fermentation sorcery.” It credits the win to Noma's founder, René Redzepi, who is credited for creating New Nordic Cuisine.
The organization highlighted the “innovative tasting menus” that the restaurant has. During the course of the year, Noma offers three different menus: ocean season from January to June, vegetable season from July to September, and game and forest from October to December.
No menu is ever the same as the team forages for unexpected ingredients that range from reindeer penis to deer drain. Vegetables are also sourced from the restaurant's on-site biodynamic farm. The restaurant closes before the start of each season as the restaurant cooks up a menu from the available ingredients.
As expected, getting a reservation at Noma is difficult. Its current game and forest is already fully booked up to December 18. Reservations for next year's ocean season have to be booked as early as this month.
For those interested in the Noma experience, signing up for the restaurant's newsletter affords them early access to upcoming seasons. Travel restrictions and quarantine requirements are also expected from international visitors.
The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is made by The World's 50 Best Restaurants, an organization that has been around since 2002 and is made up of a panel of 1,000 culinary experts. The organization has also launched the 50 Best for Recovery program, which seeks to support the hospitality sector as it recovers from the global coronavirus pandemic.
