A new TikTok trend has raised the alarm because of its serious health risk.
The “dry scoop” challenge dares TikTok users to swallow a mouthful of dry pre-workout formula without dissolving it in water.
The assumption is that consuming the energy powder as it is would maximize the effects of the B vitamins, caffeine, amino acids, and creatine in the supplement.
Experts, however, warned the public against the potentially harmful effects of such a method which can result in discomfort, choking, hospitalization, and even death.
A 20-year-old woman named Briatney Portillo reportedly suffered heart attack symptoms after consuming a pre-workout formula in powder form and continuing her exercise activity.
Doctors determined that Briatney had a non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) or a type of heart attack that is less severe but alarming just the same.
Doctors and health experts agree that ingesting a large amount of pre-workout formula in its powder form can result in a sudden caffeine jolt leading to heart palpitations and increased blood pressure.
There's also the risk of choking or the powder going into the lungs causing infection or other medical issues.
The other elements in the formula are likewise not advised to be consumed in large quantites and concentrated form.
Cassie Vanderwall, a clinical dietician at UW Health told cnet.com, “There are ingredients in those supplements that, when ingested in higher amounts, may have more potent effects. Because they are intended to be consumed over time, not all at once.
It is always advisable to ask a doctor or an expert like a dietician or nutritionist before succumbing to social media challenges that compromise health and wellness.
Keep in mind too that pre-workout supplements are not fully regulated by the Food and Drug Administration not just in the US but other parts of the world as well.
“Most people can get the protein that they need, the recommended daily allowance, by simply making healthy food choices and following a balanced diet,” Megan Kamath, MD, cardiologist and assistant clinical director of medicine at UCLA Health, told wellandgood.com.
“That is why it is important to speak with your healthcare providers before embarking on new dietary and lifestyle changes.”
