Paolo Ballesteros convinced Valerie Weigmann to join Miss World Philippines

By MARY LOUISE LIGUNAS

More than just being former co-workers in Eat Bulaga, Paolo Ballesteros and Valerie Weigmann have become really good friends.

The friendship has helped Valerie broaden her horizon as Paolo was one of the people who gave her the idea of joining Miss World Philippines 2014.

Valerie, who was doing her on-the-job training last year (2013) as a writer in Eat Bulaga, later became part of the Sugod Bahay Gang. This is where she and Paolo became closer.

“He always told me [to join] like when I was working as an on-the-job trainee. He already told me, ‘Val, try mo naman. Sayang kasi rin [if] you never try joining a pageant. So try to gain an experience out of it,’” she shared with GMANetwork.com.

Paolo also gave Valerie tips on what mindset to espouse if and when she joins.

“[He told me], ‘go in with the attitude [na] win or lose, at least you already have the experience and [it’s] also something to share, not only with the people around you but also for your future kids so you should try it habang you’re young,’” she quoted him.

After Paolo’s advice, a few other friends encouraged Valerie to try out for the pageant.

“My friends from my foundation, Musikaramay, also told me, ‘Val, try it. Miss World is such a great platform to raise awareness and funds for what you always wanted to do,’” she added.

After much thought, she finally mustered the strength to join. “I thought about it and said, ‘yeah, why not? Might as well… do it for my countrymen and for [our] indigenous brothers and sisters from all over the Philippines,” she said.

Valerie is glad to have friends like Paolo as she took that leap of faith and emerged as a crowd favorite and Miss World 2014 Philippines.

She is set to compete in Miss World 2014 in London this December.
