Paolo Contis: Ready to be good

Paolo Contis is back in primetime just a mere two weeks from his evil portrayal as Martin in “Mga Mata ni Anghelita,” But he’s this time, as the good guy. In La Vendetta, Paolo plays Junjun Sabino, raised as the grandchild of Nana Mildred (Caridad Sanchez), the Cardinale family’s mayordoma. He has been working as the family’s gardener, and his true lineage has been kept secret from him -- but secrets always have ways of coming out. “Nothing new, I’m always in primetime!” Paolo jokes with a laugh, when asked how it feels to have a teleserye again. “Hindi, masaya, at saka basically, nagpahinga ako two weeks lang. During Anghelita, alam ko nang gagawin ko ito, so, hindi na ako nagpagupit. Gusto nga nila, lagyan pa ng (hair) extensions, pero hindi kaya. Mabait ako dito (sa La Vendetta) for a change.” If you will remember, Paolo’s role in Anghelita was Martin, the son of Sta. Maria’s Mayor Carlos. In the latter part of the series, it was revealed that Mayor Carlos has an evil alter ego, Zolkar. Martin lost his wife and daughter due to his father, but in a final moment to avenge his loss, his father ends up killing him. The only reason why Martin turned to evil in Anghelita was because he was placed in circumstances where he felt he had no choice. Is Junjun going to be similar? “Well, I still don’t know what will happen, though nakalagay sa character description ko, ‘mysterious,’ so baka maging masama din ako. Pero something different, ibang genre, (drama)-suspense, so iba ito.” In the story, Junjun will be Eloisa Cardinale’s (Sunshine Dizon) defender, the one will protect the middle sister from harm inflicted by, of all people, her eldest sibling (Amanda, played by Jean Garcia). “Galit ako sa mga umaapi kay Sunshine,” explains Paolo. Paolo shares that unlike in Atlantika (2006) and Asian Treasures (2006), where he was involved in combat training and action sequences, he’s looking forward to doing more of drama in the future. “It started na excited ako sa Anghelita kasi drama, so hindi siya 'yung typical na ginagawa ko for Atlantika, Asian Treasures, Sugo (2005), na puro action na lang and everything. Kung baga excited ako sa drama part na hindi mo na kailangan makipagsuntukan, kasi nakakapagod siya physically.” This is the reason why he feels that La Vendetta will be a change, and he’s looking forward to pushing his dramatic acting skills to the limit.
