SAS celebrates Sinulog, incorporates Cebuano elements in competition

Sunday All Stars brought the Sinulog Festival to the studios of GMA as it paid tribute to the Santo Niño in an afternoon of song, dance and color. The episode included live patches from Cebu with the stars of Carmela: Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw, Marian Rivera and Alden Richards, as well as the leading cast members of Rhodora X, Jennylyn Mercado and Mark Herras.

The show began with a parade, inspired by the grand parade which highlights the yearly celebration in the Visayan city. The competition among the four teams revolved around the products that Cebu is popular for. Aside from that, each team must choose a festival queen who will serve as their muse.

Tweet Hearts opened the competition with the entrance of their festival queen Barbie Forteza who was adorned in gold and red. The Cebuano element that inspired their performance is the guitar, whose sound was replicated with a powerful voice showcase by team member Jonalyn Viray, one of this week’s Best Performers. Cebu is known to produce the finest guitars in this musically-inclined country.

Ligang iLike, meanwhile, had the mango as the theme of their production. Dried mangoes, in particular, makes the list of Cebu’s top exported products. Winwyn Marquez, the festival queen, wore a glittery and bright yellow dress and a head dress containing different variations of the fruit.

The third performer and this week’s winner Tropang Trending prepared a danggit-inspired number that tells the story of fishermen who are sent off by their wives to work through an emotional yet fun-filled celebration. Louise delos Reyes, their festival queen, donned a blue full-length gown, an authentic Sinulog costume that the team had sent over from Cebu.

Guest judge Dingdong Dantes said that their number speaks of the heart of the Filipino. “Kung kanina, 'yung ipinakita nila is energy, kayo ang ipinakita niyo ang puso ng pagiging Pilipino… Ramdam na ramdam ko 'yung yaman na gusto niyong ipakita,” he commented.

The week’s competition was closed by the lechon-themed production from Insta Gang. The famous lechon Cebu is popular nationwide and is considered a must-try when tourists visit the city. Insta Gang member Rita de Guzman, who wowed the audience with a dance and rap number, bagged the other Best Performer award. Their festival queen Julie Anne San Jose wore a white dress with silver details.

Sinulog is an annual Cebuano festival that honors the Santo Niño and is celebrated on the third Sunday of January.
