Lauren Young admits to losing roles because of how she looks and weighs

By Felix Ilaya

Strong and outspoken actresses Lauren Young, Andrea Torres, Mikee Quintos, Janine Gutierrez, Thia Thomalla, Athena Madrid, and Cai Cortez all got together to talk about their experiences as women in the industry on GMA Artist Center's "How Do You Feel: Womanhood."

Ana Feleo, one of the show's hosts, brought up the topic of weight and if it has ever affected their chances at getting jobs or roles.

There, Lauren admitted that she has been experiencing that kind of discrimination for the past five years.

"I used to be very very skinny, I used to be very very fit. I gained a lot of weight in the past few years. Me gaining weight, it's not just a physical thing for me.

"What people don't understand is that even though I may not be the skinniest girl in town, I have never been happier because when I was skinny I was miserable because I was tired. It's hard to be skinny!

"I thought that I was only valued for how I looked, and then when I gained weight and I saw that I was still valued because of my talent and because of the things I'm capable of, I don't wanna lose the weight because I'm proud to say that I'm a girl on TV who represents a majority of how people look like and that's something that I don't wanna take back.

"At the end of the day, regardless of how I look, I would give you the performance of a lifetime. I wouldn't be here if I wasn't a good actor," she said.

Chynna Ortaleza, who also hosted their talk, agreed with Lauren's sentiments as someone who has been "stick thin" all her life.

According to Chynna,"[I have] Been judged by the fact that I've been stick thin to the point that early on in my career, I was really thinking if I should go that route.

"I'm not the only one in the industry who's experienced that kind of judgment to the point that they're even labeling you to be sick with anorexia or bulimia because you were born this way."
