Alpha male 'General' Roi Vinzon dons priestly robes in 'Katipunan'

The phenomenal and daring Primetime series My Husband’s Lover has just wrapped up.

Roi Vinzon now hangs up the starched military uniform of General Soriano and dons the immaculate vestments of Padre Villalon, an oppressive man of God in the new series Katipunan.

Will his new character be just as memorable?

We caught up with Roi Vinzon backstage before One More Try: My Husband’s Lover The Concert last October 12 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Vinzon has undeniably portrayed a pivotal role as General Soriano in My Husband’s Lover. The role was an epitome of what he does best, being an iconic action star and a well-known villain in films during the '80s and the '90s.

What surprised the audience was his ability to bring out the humanity in his character’s alpha male, seemingly stone cold exterior. We got to see the gun-slinging, leather jacket-wearing, fist fight expert of a man cry on national television when he found out that his son was gay. We saw how he brought out the husband, father, grandfather and the humanity in General Soriano.

As if exceeding our expectations weren’t enough, the legendary actor surprised us once more when he belted out a touching duet with Kuh Ledesma during the One More Try: My Husband’s Lover The Concert. Wildly applauded, Mr. Vinzon revealed that he can also carry a tune. Who knew that he used to be a band member?

There are so many facets to Roi Vinzon that the possibilities of what he could bring to the table seem endless. Now cast as a priest, he gears up to show what he’s got in a quite different territory.

Vinzon will be breathing life into Padre Villalon in the historically significant GMA series, Katipunan.

No one in San Mateo town knows where the new parish priest came from. Some say Padre Villalon fought for Spain in Cuba, while others say he is a war veteran from Spain. But there was one thing they were sure of: Padre Villalon should be feared, for he is an ally of the colonizers.

A newcomer in the province, Padre Villalon firmly implemented the Spanish laws to the indios, whom he believes are good-for-nothing slaves.

Based on the character sketch, it looks like Roi Vinzon will be giving another unforgettably superb performance, so make sure to watch out for him in Katipunan, every Saturday at 10:15 pm only on GMA. - Text by Samantha Portillo, Photo by Bochic Estrada, GMANetwork.com
