Eula Valdez and Miguel Tanfelix praised for their performance in 'Magpakailanman'

"A day after I turned proudly fortysomething, I got to watch a superlative actress at work in last night's Magpakailanman episode which capitalized on the young actor being built up by the network. But Eula Valdes' alternately matiisin and mahigpit na nanay dominates the episode. This is not to say that Miguel Tanfelix disappoints because he certainly does not. In fact, ilaban mo si, say, Enrique Gil of the rival studio and there's no doubt in my mind na pakakainin siya ng alikabok ni Miguel," he begins his review.

He goes on by likening Miguel to fellow Kapuso actors Ruru Madrid and Kiko Estrada who are effective in using their eyes to convey their emotions.

"Like Ruru (Madrid), EA Guzman and Kiko (Estrada), Miguel knows how to use his eyes to convey a spectrum of emotions without the aid of dialogue. And surprisingly, parang mas masarap siyang panoorin without his love team partner and yes, sans a leading lady in the story."

As for Eula, who played Miguel's mother, Arnel says "ang sarap n'yang sampal-sampalin sa husay niya."

He adds, "The episode has no glaring loopholes but the plot itself has a tendency to turn mawkish. It takes an excellent actress to astutely manage to hurdle the maudlin elements of the story. I so like the way that the episode is able to touch on a timely concern among the youth - the seeming addiction to online games - but Magpakailanman wisely does not just gloss over the issue but goes beyond the surface, presenting one poor lad's story as a microcosm that mirrors the many ills of modern technology and modern life, the consequences of video game gambling, how it almost breaks a family apart but in the end, gives that very family a chance to start over after a major bump on the road. In effect, the episode also pays tribute to the resilience of most Pinoy families. And I am talking here of the regular families that fight to survive in a country where other clans steal money from the government, deny it to death and gun for top positions in the land.

Eula has really become such an instinctive actress who knows how to put just the right amount of intensity and/or employ subtlety to scene after scene, seemingly possessed of a gut feel for what will make a particular scene work.

Take note of the scene where she confronts her daughter about her youngest son's misbehavior and when the latter tells her that Miguel's character just wants to help out the family in the fastest way he knows, a tear simply drops down Eula's face which registers a mix of pity and pride for her child and helplessness that she can barely make ends meet single handedly for her brood. Next to that is the scene where Miguel Tanfelix and Eula share a moment at the dining table na parehong napakahusay nila.

Finally, after Miguel's character's death, Eula will break your heart as she finds a small garapon with money in it and her panganay tells her that MIguel saved it up for his ate's panganganak. Grief written all over her, Eula clutches the bottle tightly like it were her dead son's body, expressing so much without a single line spoken.

Bravo! And more lovely, poignant episodes like this, please."

Eula was recently hailed as Gawad Urian's Best Actress for her performance in Dagitab, while Miguel is becoming popular in Indonesia because of his 'Twerk It Like Miley' video.
