By Racquel Quieta

Celebrities are just as human as the rest of us are. They also feel beaten, discouraged, and lost sometimes.

In a recent episode of Mars Pa More, celebrity guests Rachelle Ann Go and Antoinette Taus opened up about how they both struggled with depression, and how they eventually overcame it.

Antoinette revealed that it was the death of her mother that triggered her depression, which lasted for more than 10 years.

She narrated, “After namatay ng mommy ko, noong naramdaman ko 'yung pain na 'yon, I felt lost. Na parang (nasabi kong) 'Ano ba talaga? Bakit ba ako nandito? Ano ba talaga dapat kong gawin sa buhay? Ano'ng reason ko? Na parang Is this it?' And I felt like I was never happy.”

But fast-forward to now, she has already learned how to best cope with her depression. She shared, “I accepted it and realized that we all go through the same things. And I realized (also) that the main purpose of life for all of us is to really try to give love, to be kind to each other.”

Antoinette also offered important advice to those who are going through depression. She said, “We're so hard on ourselves kapag nagkakamali tayo. There's so much more inside of you that is so special that it can make a difference in the world. But you have to believe it first.”

As for the international theater actress Rachelle Ann Go, she recounted how she struggled when she moved to another country to start her international musical theater career.

She detailed, “Mahirap ang industry at ang dami kong struggles. At nung pumunta ako sa London, I was living alone. I was homesick without my mom. Every night talaga umiiyak ako. So, ilang years 'yon. I think I was depressed na rin. I was anxious. 'Di ako nakakakain, nakakatulog.”

But like Antoinette, Rachelle Ann also had important realizations that helped her beat her depression, one of which was finding her purpose.

She said, “Dahil mag-isa ako doon, ang daming realizations na 'What is my purpose? Why am I doing this job?' [And the answer is] to really tell the story to people and to share and be a light out there. And to be a mentor as well sa mga dreamers na katulad ko. Kasi marami rin akong nakikitang Asians doon na nanunuod and they look up like that. Makikita mo sa mata nila na 'one day I wanna be like you.' parang ganun.”
