Carla Abellana lists things to consider before adopting a dog

Kapuso star Carla Abellana is a known animal-lover and animal welfare advocate. She currently has five dogs as pets and two of them are aspins.

In a recent Mars Pa More episode, Carla showed how she usually bathes her dogs with the help of Fly, one of her adopted fur babies from PAWS.

Aside from sharing grooming tips, Carla and her boyfriend, Kapuso actor Tom Rodriguez, also encouraged those who are planning to own a pet to adopt instead of buying from pet shops.

She then shared some tips and things to consider for those who are planning to adopt a dog from a shelter.

1. Be ready to commit.

According to Carla, caring for a pet is much like caring for a human baby. It is a lifetime commitment and an aspiring pet owner should be ready for it.

2. Visit the animal shelter more than once.

This is a good way to build rapport with the dog you're eyeing to adopt and also a good way to tell if the particular pet really has the right personality that you're looking for in a fur baby.

3. Financial consideration

Make sure you are financially ready to adopt a pet. Dogs will need vaccines, deworming, regular vet checkups, and vitamins, on top of their other needs such as food. You should be able to consistently provide all these for your pets.

4. Time

Of course, dogs need time from you, not just for feeding and grooming time, but also for some attention and affection. Be sure you have time to cuddle or play with your pet, if you're planning to adopt one.

5. Space

Dogs, especially puppies, love to run around. So, in adopting a dog you need to consider the space in your home. Large dogs obviously need plenty of room to walk or run around in the house. Ideally you should at least have a garage or outdoor area in your home, such as a garden.

Carla warns that most aspins in shelters are of medium to large size and would need more space compared to small breeds like the chihuahua or toy poodle.

So, if you're planning to adopt a fur baby soon, better take all of Carla's tips and advice into consideration so that you can have a hassle-free and beautiful adoption story with your future fur baby.
