A Beatles birthday surprise for Joey de Leon

Kapuso funnyman Joey de Leon had wanted a quiet 68th birthday celebration last Oct. 14 with family and close friends.

“Pag marami ka nang birthday, nakakatamad na rin,” he told GMANetwork.com.

He said those in Eat Bulaga are usually gifted with a trip abroad for their birthday, but he didn’t want any.

He said he already had so many trips and the Dabarkads are going to Hong Kong in a few weeks for a special show, anyway.

This year, on his special day, he attended a thanksgiving mass at the Mount Carmel Church. He had been expecting only a private dinner afterwards.

He sensed a surprise coming when his wife, Eileen Macapagal de Leon, told him not to leave the house.

Joey said he was touched when he learned that his wife brought to Manila the Reo Brothers, a band that has become famous internationally for its renditions of songs from the 1950s to the 1970s which include those of the Beatles.

Joey wanted to meet the group and hear them perform, and Eileen knew that it would make him happy.

Joey’s Startalk family also gave him a little tribute last Oct. 11, complete with cupcakes and a cheesecake with a single candle in the middle.

He extinguished the candle’s flame by waving his hand over it – a trick he learned from GMA anchor Mel Tiangco.

He then said he wished for security and contentment for everyone.

“Sana wala nang mahoholdap na 12 years old na nagtitinda ng pandesal,” he said. - RB
