GMA Network offers an intriguing and fascinating drama in 'The Half Sisters'

This is the attention-grabbing premise of The Half Sisters, GMA Network’s newest drama series beginning June 9 on the Afternoon Prime block.

The Half Sisters explores the phenomenon about hetero-paternal superfecundation wherein there is a successive fertilization of two or more ova from the same ovulation by different sires. This is made possible by separate successive acts of sexual intercourse resulting to one woman bearing “twins” with different fathers.

This controversial soap opera stars Kapuso teen actresses Barbie Forteza as Diana Alcantara, the kind, diligent and obedient girl who has struggles to remain as a loving daughter and sister despite the unequal treatment she receives from the father she grew up; and Thea Tolentino as Ashley Alcantara, the spoiled, conceited and manipulative girl who agrees with the plan her father set up.

The series also stars seasoned actress Jean Garcia as Rina Mercado-Alcantara, the doting mother of Diana and Ashley; versatile actor Jomari Yllana as Benjamin/Benjie Valdicañas, the ex-boyfriend of Rina and the biological father of Diana; and seasoned actor Ryan Eigenmann as Alfred Alcantara, ambitious and hardworking biological father to Ashley and husband of Rina.

Playing opposite the teen actresses are the Kapuso Network’s up and coming leading men, Derrick Monasterio as Baste Torres, a working student who will be Diana’s close friend; and Andre Paras as Bradly Castillo, the rich, good-looking school jock.

Completing the cast are JC Tiuseco as Carl, the best friend of Benjie as well as the operations manager of Benjie’s business; Carlo Gonzales as Paolo, the trusted doctor and friend of Alfred; Mel Martinez as Venus, the cousin and confidante of Rina; Pinky Marquez as Cleo Castillo, the mother of Bradly; and Carmen Soriano as Lupita Valdicañas, the grandmother of Benjie.

In the series, Rina (Jean) is the childbearing woman of the “twins,” one sired through amorous marital copulation with her husband Alfred (Ryan) and the other sired when she was raped by her former boyfriend Benjie (Jomari).

Benjie is sent to prison because of what he did; while Rina remains a loving wife to Alfred as they live a financially comfortable life together. Eventually, Rina got pregnant and gives birth to twins Diana (Barbie) and Ashley (Thea).

However, Alfred is having doubts about who the father is, he demands Rina to undergo DNA testing that resulted to a confirmation of hetero-paternal superfecundation, wherein Rina’s twins have different fathers – Diana by Benjie and Ashley by Alfred.

Meanwhile, after Benjie is released from prison, he managed their family business which eventually became successful. On the other hand, Alfred’s business failed. Prompted by financial woes and obligations, and knowing the truth about Diana and Benjie, Alfred asks her daughter Ashley to pretend to be the biological daughter of Benjie so his daughter can live a more comfortable life, thus, robbing Diana her birthright and as the rightful heiress.

How will the uncommon situation affect Alfred and Rina’s marriage? Until when can Alfred and Ashley keep their plans going? Will Benjie and Diana ever know the truth about their father-daughter relationship?

The creative team is composed of Creative Director Jun Lana; Creative Head Roy Iglesias; Creative Consultant Richard ‘Dode’ Cruz; Headwriter Luningning Interino-Ribay; Writers Christine Badillo-Novicio, Gilda Olvidado-Marcelino and Jonathan Cruz; and Brainstormers Jake Somero and Wiro Michael Ladera.
