Councilor Cristina Gonzalez-Romualdez gives updates on Tacloban

By MARY LOUISE LIGUNAS

Former actress and now politician Cristina Gonzalez-Romuladez flew from Tacloban to Manila to make an appearance in Walang Tulugan.

In an interview with Kuya Germs and Aster Amoyo, she expressed gratefulness for the help their city has been receiving. The councilor also gave updates on their progress through three salient descriptions of the Filipinos.

The Filipino is generous

Following the news of the typhoon, different individuals and groups gave outpouring support for the victims of the calamity. “Maraming tumutulong. Up to now, talagang malaki ang pasasalamat namin sa [lahat],” she said.

She also mentioned that the GMA Kapuso Foundation had houses built in Tacloban. “Ang unang-unang nagpapatayo ng bahay ngayon, and by December, nandun na, is ang GMA Kapuso (Foundation). That’s 400 houses,” she added.

The Filipino is resilient

According to the councilor, the silver lining to all these is the realization that the Filipino can rise above any challenges thrown at him.

“Yung kulturang Waray-waray, very thankful sila. I think it’s also kulturang Pilipino… Nagkuwento 'yung ibang NGO, na syempre galing sila mga disgrasya sa iba't-ibang bansa... and iba talaga 'yung sa atin. 'Yung iba, sila pa nagdedemand na kulang pa 'yung bigay. Tayo daw, sa Pilipinas, talagang laging nagpapasalamat, tuwang-tuwa. Nakangiti pa,” she noted.

The Filipino is loved

Her husband Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez is currently focused on bringing the people who live in tents to safer shelters. She said that this endeavor wouldn’t be possible if not for the support that they’ve been receiving.

“Unti-unti naming nalilipat with the help of some good friends of ours, also other groups and other NGOs [and] faith-based groups. Nalilipat po natin sila unti-unti,” she said.

The city is also preparing for the visit of Pope Francis in January 2015. “Gusto [natin na] pagdating ng Santo papa, medyo maayos na sa may airport… [We’re praying] for peace and order also,” she shared.
