Batanes bet wins Best in Tourism on Miss Universe Philippines 2020

Batanes bet Jan Alexis Elcano bagged the "Best in Tourism" award during the first Miss Universe Philippines 2020 pageant.

"Batanes, I will wear your name across my heart, with all my heart.  Ilang araw na lang at lilisanin ko ang paraiso na siyang ating probinsya, at susuuingin ang pandemya upang dalhin ang pangalan ng Batanes sa entablado ng Miss Universe Philippines," Elcano wrote in the caption of her Instagram post showing off her hometown in a video.

"San man ako dalhin at kung ano man ang magiging kahinatnan ng paglalakbay kong ito, ako, na isang Ivatan, ay habang buhay mamahalin ang Batanes," she added.

It can be remembered that Miss Batanes boarded a cargo vessel just to get to the pageant held in Baguio City.

During the preliminary Q&A streamed on Empire.ph on Wednesday, when asked why it was so important for her to make it to the competition, Elcano said she did it not only to represent her province, but also to embody that resilience that Ivatans are known for.

"We rarely get to represent Batanes in the national pageant scene, and I would like to promote not just Batanes as a place, but the Ivatans," Elcano said.
