Is ‘Hamilton’ coming to Manila? Lin-Manuel Miranda be like: 'Kumusta, Philippines! What’s up dude, pare?'

Is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit musical “Hamilton” finally coming to the Philippines?

Filipino fans of musical theatre are all agog when GMG Productions, the same company that has been helping bring Broadway musicals to Manila, posted on its social media accounts a very short video titled “A Message from Lin-Manuel Miranda."

The six-second video has Miranda coming from the left side and taking a seat on a black couch saying, “Kumusta, Philippines! What’s up dude, pare?”

On Facebook Messenger, GMA News Online tried to confirm with an executive of GMG Productions, who refused to be named for privacy reasons. The only reply we got? Three “my-lips-are-sealed” emojis, with neither a confirmation nor a denial if it’s indeed the popular musical. 

“We will break the news very soon,” she said.

“Hamilton” tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of what is now the United States of America. Miranda wrote the lyrics, music and libretto of this sung-and-rapped-through musical, based on the book “Alexander Hamilton” by Ron Chernow, published in 2004.

The musical premiered off-Broadway, on February 17, 2015, at the Public Theater in New York City. 

When it became a hit and was transferred to Broadway, it won 11 awards at the 70th Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It has also received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a filmed version was released in 2020 on Disney Plus.

Most fans are betting on “Hamilton” because Miranda’s other hit musical, “In The Heights” has been staged in the Philippines in 2012, by Atlantis Productions.

Miranda actually made a visit to the Manila to grace the opening night on March 16, 2012 at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater in RCBC Building, Makati City.

GMG Productions’ most recent musical to be brought in Manila was “The Sound of Music.” It had a one-month run that ended just this Sunday, March 26. In the last quarter of 2022, it brought “We Will Rock You,” the musical that pays tribute to the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen. — LA, GMA Integrated News
