Construction worker who bikes to work gets safety gear from ‘Unang Hirit’

A 45-year-old construction worker who has been biking to work has received safety gear from “Unang Hirit.”

Since the lockdown began, Benjamin de Guzman has been traveling using an old and unstable bike from Cainta, Rizal, to Quezon City every day.

To help him get around safely, Ivan Mayrina of GMA’s morning show “Unang Hirit” handed over to him a helmet and a pair of biking gloves on Friday.

Benjamin thanked Ivan for the surprise.

The construction worker shared how he had to endure honks from passing drivers since he had to pedal carefully.

He also took the opportunity to urge all motorists to be careful and mindful of cyclists and other road users.

“Sana po mag-ingat sila kasi delikado sa kalsada, tsaka kailangan din ng bike, malaking tulong ngayong may COVID-19,” said Benjamin.

“Unang Hirit” has been giving away free bikes and safety gear to essential workers as more people have turned to cycling as an alternative way to get around in the so-called new normal. – Margaret Claire Layug/RC, GMA News
