Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan said Barangay 28 in Dagat-Dagatan district will be placed under total lockdown from May 26 to May 31 as a response to the rising cases of COVID-19 in the area.

The total lockdown will begin at 12 midnight on Tuesday, May 26, and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, Malapitan confirmed to GMA News Online on Monday.

This is the third barangay lockdown ordered by Malapitan since the start of the enhanced community quarantine.

On May 13,  Barangay 156 was placed under total lockdown also due to the reported high number of COVID-19 cases in the area. The total lockdown lasted til May 15.

On Sunday, Malapitan also extended the lockdown imposed on Barangay 12 until May 30 after an increase in positive COVID-19 cases.

The lockdown on the barangay, which began on May 17, was supposed to be lifted on May 23.

However, Malapitan said latest data from the city health department showed a total of 49 residents from Barangay 12 have contracted the virus. The barangay currently has the highest number of cases in the city.

“While under total lockdown the barangay continues to make the priority in mass testing and contact tracing residents in the area to prevent the spread of the virus,” Malapitan said in a Facebook post.

He added the city government will provide relief packs for the residents’ food supply.

The Department of Public Safety and Traffic Management is also doing disinfection in the area round the clock, he said.

Malapitan also said the Caloocan Police will continue to catch residents who will violate lockdown guidelines.

As of May 23, Caloocan has a total of 455 cases of COVID-19, including 34 deaths and 100 recoveries. — RSJ, GMA News
