First alarm raised as Marikina River level reaches 15 meters

The Marikina River's status was raised to first alarm as its water level reached 15 meters on Tuesday evening, city government said.

In a Facebook post, Marikina Public Information Office said all eight gates of Manggahan Floodway were opened at 11:18 p.m.

Authorities previously raised the first alarm, which means "warning," over the river on Sunday.

After more than 30 minutes, the water level increased to 15.1 meters.

The Marikina government also reported that flooding at Tumana Road 1 is already gutter-deep or eight inches deep.

At past 5 a.m. Wednesday, the water level reached 15.5 meters.

Some residents chose to preemptively evacuate from their homes, according to a report by Bam Alegre on GMA News' Unang Balita on Wednesday.

On Monday, water level at the Marikina River remained at normal level despite incessant rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon.

The second alarm (16 meters) means "prepare", while the third alarm (17 meters) means "evacuate."

PAGASA said Metro Manila, rest of Cagayan Valley, rest of Cordillera Administrative Region, rest of Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Northern Palawan including Cuyo and Calamian Islands, Antique, and Aklan will have occasional rains on Wednesday due to the Southwest Monsoon with possible flooding or rain-induced landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains. — Consuelo Marquez/BM/KG, GMA News
