Taguig lauded for targeted response instead of city-wide lockdown

By JOVILAND RITA,GMA News

Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. lauded Taguig City's targeted response to the spread of COVID-19 among hundreds of workers at a construction site recently.

The chief implementer of the national policy against the coronavirus said Taguig might lose P16.7 billion in two weeks if the city was locked down due to the spread.

Galvez commended Mayor Lino Cayetano for imposing the lockdown only at the site and not over the whole city considering its economic impact.

“Ang nakita natin dito ‘yung balance between economy and health e. Pinakita nga ni Mayor Lino how we can save lives, at the same time, save the economy,” Galvez said.

According to Galvez, closing down the entire city may result in a loss of around P16.7 billion in two weeks.

Due to this, Galvez advised other mayors to emulate the implementation of localized lockdowns only in virus-affected areas.

“Kaya isa itong lesson learned na puwedeng i-apply ng isang mayor using granular data  na magkaroon sila ng targeted lockdown,” he said.

On June 24, a localized lockdown had been implemented at the construction site in the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) after a group of individuals were reportedly experiencing fever.

It was confirmed that at least six construction workers have COVID-19. On July 9, the number of infected construction workers rose to 327.

On Tuesday, Mayor Cayetano said the transmission of COVID-19 infections in the construction site in Fort Bonifacio had been contained. -NB, GMA News
