5 more health workers succumb to COVID-19

The Department of Health (DOH) reported Sunday that five more health workers died from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) over the past week, raising the death toll to 83 as of January 23.

In its daily report, the DOH said total infections among health workers rose to 14,428 after 171 more contracted the respiratory disease, while total recoveries grew to 14,012 after 154 more recovered from COVID-19.

The other 333 medical workers are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine.

Nurses logged the highest number of COVID-19 cases within their ranks with 5,152 infections, followed by doctors with 2,331, nursing assistants with 1,091, medical technologists with 735, and midwives with 501 cases.

Over 600 other non-medical personnel, such as utility workers, security guards, and administrative staff, were also included in the tally.
