Vico Sotto to netizen doubting anti-corruption drive: Pati naman kayo, di pa po pinapanganak noon

Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto clapped back at a netizen who seemed to be unimpressed by the local chief executive's anti-corruption campaign.

Responding to a tweet from Sotto lauding the U.S. Department of State for recognizing him as an "Anticorruption Champion," the netizen said that corruption in the Philippines has persisted long before the mayor came into the world.

"Di ka pinangangak iho, iyan na ang problema sa Pilipinas!" the tweet read.

Quick to retort, Sotto acknowledged that while corruption is a long-standing problem, addressing it is a gradual process.

"Pati naman po kayo, di pa po kayo pinapanganak, iyan na ang problema sa Pilipinas. Our problems have been ingrained in our government and culture for hundreds of years," Sotto said.

"Ngunit kung lalabanan natin, darating ang pagbabago, kahit paunti-unti," Sotto continued.

In thanking the U.S. State Department, Sotto emphasized the need to raise awareness and "denormalize" corruption.

"[M]ore than the recognition, I hope this helps raise awareness," Sotto said.

"If we want better long-term governance, we need to fight corruption. We have to denormalize it, get it out of our culture," the Pasig City Mayor added.
