By HANA BORDEY,GMA News

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday announced the resumption of voter registration on Monday, May 17, as the NCR Plus was placed on general community quarantine (GCQ) beginning May 15.

In its first media conference for the 2022 national and local elections, the Comelec said the registration will be open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Just recently the President announced that the NCR and the provinces of Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna, which were under MECQ, have been categorized to GCQ. With that beginning Monday, Comelec will be resuming registrations in these areas from Mondays to Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Comelec executive director Bartolome Sinocruz Jr. said.

So far, Bartolome said there are 58.9 million registered voters in the country.

Comelec suspended voter registration in NCR Plus in late March due to the implementation of enhanced community quarantine -- the strictest among quarantine protocols -- amid the surge of COVID-19 cases.

In a public address Thursday night, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the NCR Plus under GCQ "with heightened restrictions" from May 15 to May 31, 2021.  —KBK, GMA News
