PNP death toll due to COVID-19 now at 88

Another cop died due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll among the Philippine National Police personnel to 88, the police organization said on Wednesday.

In an update, the PNP said the latest fatality is a 48-year-old police lieutenant colonel who is designated as officer-in-charge of the Regional Intelligence Unit 4B in Oriental Mindoro.

He underwent the RT-PCR test on August 7. On August 8, the cop died at a hospital in Calapan City, according to the PNP.

The antecedent cause of his death is acute respiratory distress syndrome systemic inflammatory response syndrome and the underlying cause is chronic hypersensitive cardiovascular disease, it added.

According to the PNP, the latest fatality received his first dose of Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine on July 23.

As of Wednesday, the PNP has recorded a total of 31,799 COVID-19 cases with 114 new infections. At least 29,899 have already recovered while 1,812 are still active cases. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
